Oh, The Places You’ll Go…In Active Addiction

The Places you will Go

BY: Tim Myers

Congratulations!
Today is your day!
You’re off to strange places!
You’re high and away!

You have brains in your head
But you’ll lose them soon
You can steer yourself
Towards any drug you choose
You’re on your own with plenty to try
There are many places to go before you die

You look up and down the streets without a care
Oh! An abandoned building! “I choose to go there”
With your head full of crack and pipe in your hand
You stare into the darkness of this sad and mad land

You search for a friend
As you start to come down
But now you’re a crack-head
And have no friends in this town

Your heart is pounding and you need some air
So you decide to keep walking with a soulless stare

Out there things can happen
And they frequently do
So you look for a needle and some heroin too!

When things start to happen
Don’t worry, don’t stew
Your eyes are in the back of your head
And your face just turned blue

The hotel you’re in, you pay by the hour
The sheets are stained, the water is sour

But you don’t care ‘cause you can’t move from the floor
You hear the sirens blaring from outside the door

OH!
THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!

You’re on your way up!
You’re seeing great sights!
Like your mother crying
And the bright hospital lights

You won’t stay long because there’s something you need
You swore off the hard stuff, now it’s just a little weed
The whole gang will move ahead and you’ll soon fall behind
They’ll all grow up, get married and succeed
And you’ll be in the basement “just smoking weed”

Except when you don’t
Because sometimes you won’t

I’m sorry to say so
But sadly it’s true
You’re going to start drinking
It can happen to you!

From bar to bar, you’ll stumble and fall
As the other drunks laugh and puke on the wall

You’ll get behind the wheel and now you’re in a prickly perch
You’ll crash that car and be left in a lurch

You’ll come down from the lurch
With an unpleasant bump
And chances are you’ll wake and you’ll jump

“What the heck happened?” You’ll scream and you’ll yell
As you grip the bars of your brand new cell

You’ll end up in a place where you’re told what to do
Told when to sleep and when to go poo
There are no windows, not one, and everything’s dark
You’ll pray to the Lord for a fresh new start

And IF you get out, should you go left or right?
Or right-and-three-quarters? Or maybe not quite?
Or go back to the beginning before the grind?
Simple it’s not, I’m afraid you will find
It’s tough for an addict to make up their mind

KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!
They all used to say
That was a long time ago
And many miles away

So…
Be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
Or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea
You’re off to strange places!
Today is your day!
Your drugs are waiting

Don’t go…stay!
