Life Skills Development
Skills We Teach in our Life Skills Program
As part of life skills development at Lighthouse Recovery Institute, we incorporate relapse prevention programs and other evidence-based programs designed to promote cognitive skills critical for sustained recovery. Problem-solving techniques that can help patients manage stressful situations better, and technical assistance to help young people find a qualifying job when they’re ready.
Independent Living Skills
People who have battled with addiction struggle with activities of independent daily living. These activities can range include:
- Cooking
- Maintaining employment
- Cleaning
- Routine grooming
During treatment, our clinical team will work on teaching and incorporating various independent living skills such as maintaining a daily schedule, supporting personal hygiene, food preparation, and nutrition skills.
Emotional Regulation
Emotional regulation is about identifying, managing, and responding to emotions to allow individuals to use their feelings in a healthy capacity. This strategy incorporates fundamental tools from mindfulness, which assists in understanding and being in tune with what you are feeling inside.
Vocational Development Services
While in treatment, your loved one will receive vocational development services. These skills are integrated into treatment programming to help the patient prepare for, secure, and sustain employment.
Vocational development services that we provide include:
- Personalized case management
- Individual program plan
- Employability skills
- Resume building
- Interview skills
- Mock interviews
- Email creation
- Basic technology tutoring
Social Skills
Many people have turned to drugs and alcohol to deal with most social interactions to overcome their anxiety or feel more comfortable in their skin. These beliefs need reframing, and the person needs to understand how these ideas about themselves are more harmful than beneficial.
During treatment, our patients learn how to identify social connections they can rely on for support and what social cues trigger a potential relapse. The goal is to enable them to trust themselves more and gain healthy relationships.
Medication Management
Because we are a dual diagnosis drug and alcohol treatment center, many of the patients in our care have some form of a mental health diagnosis or co-occurring disorder. The medical staff prescribes certain psychotropic medications for these individuals for symptom management purposes. Mental health is critical, and understanding medication compliance and safety is crucial for long-term sobriety and overall well-being. We provide the right environment for the patient to learn these skills while in addiction treatment.
Developmental Therapy
The first test of life skills that a person encounters while in addiction treatment begins when they take charge of themselves for the first time. We explore necessary everyday skills such as doing their laundry, taking care of their hygiene, presenting with a clean appearance, goal setting, cleaning their living space, and nutrition skills such as grocery shopping and food preparation.
By learning new skills, we can increase our patient’s understanding of the community around them and prepare each to live a more fulfilling life. The goal should always be to find new and appropriate ways to cope with the challenges that lie ahead.
