The Importance of Holistic Therapy for Addiction Treatment

Several holistic therapy practices are offered as part of treatment for addiction. Holistically-based therapeutic methods have become increasingly popular in Florida drug rehab centers over the past several years, proving to be highly successful as supplements to standard therapy and evidence-based practices.

We at Lighthouse Recovery Institute implement several methods of holistic therapy. Incorporation of such methods leads to a far more comprehensive recovery and sets a significantly more solid foundation for lasting and fulfilled sobriety.

What is Holistic Therapy?

Holistic psychotherapy is an integrative approach that focuses on the relationship between mind, body, and spirit. This type of therapy hopes to help people develop a more in-depth understanding of themselves on a spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional way. It uses evidence-based treatment, in conjunction with a holistic framework that can incorporate:

  • Psychodinamic therapy
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Breathwork
  • Mindfulness
  • Reiki

Holistically-Based Methods of Therapy and Rehabilitation

Holistic therapy can help a broad range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, and stress management. However, it can also help with behavioral issues, including addiction.

Acupuncture

Small, finely-tipped needles are inserted into specifically designated parts of the body, intended to improve the flow of vital energy. Acupuncture helps relieve pain and helps to treat chronic illness (such as substance dependency). Many holistically-based treatment centers in South Florida have begun utilizing acupuncture as a supplemental form of therapy.

Acupressure

This form of holistic therapy is ideal for those who may be apprehensive about using needles. It is similar to acupuncture in theory but uses the application of pressure rather than the puncturing of the skin. This form of therapy helps treat tension and physical pain but has been successful in helping to alleviate stress and anxiety.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback therapy has become increasingly popular in more progressive treatment facilities throughout the country and has proven extremely successful in helping recovering addicts maintain long-term sobriety. This therapeutic method uses state-of-the-art electronic equipment to monitor slight metabolic changes within the body.

Patients learn to adjust their state of being to improve issues related to stress, anxiety, insomnia, and drug addiction. They work to consciously visualize and imagine self-betterment while observing feedback that consists of both light and sound.

Aromatherapy

This form of therapy complements other holistic methods of healing, such as acupuncture, meditation, or massage. Essential oils, which are distilled from herbs and other plants, are either massaged into the skin or inhaled to promote relief from anxiety and an extensive list of other potential ailments.

Psychotherapy

Believe it or not, psychotherapy does qualify as holistic therapy – and it is one of the most influential and widely used forms of holistic treatment in treatment centers throughout the country. In most cases, clients will also meet with a psychotherapist one-on-one for several hours per week.

Hypnotherapy

This technique works by tapping into the subconscious mind, where suppressed memories and childhood trauma tend to dwell. Licensed hypnotherapists will work closely with patients, helping them to change their behaviors, emotions, and attitudes. Hypnotherapy has proven extremely successful in treating addicts and alcoholics who suffer from underlying trauma-related disorders.

Yoga Therapy

Yoga has become one of the most widely utilized forms of holistic therapy, and it extremely beneficial in helping addicts to connect their bodies and their minds. Throughout this practice, they learn to respect their physical forms and heal themselves through movement, breathing, and meditation.

Is Holistic Therapy Effective?

A lot of people struggle to see the effectiveness of holistic therapy. Because holistic medicine encompasses so many alternatives, it can be challenging to pinpoint a specific statistic. However, one study found that holistic treatments, including relaxation techniques and Reiki, can help people manage physical pain and decrease adverse emotional reactions.

Of course, holistic therapy should be used in conjunction with more conventional therapy treatments. In addiction treatment, we are focusing on holistic medicine, medication-assisted treatment, and other evidence-based resources to tackle the addiction.

What to Look For?

Regardless of the type of holistic therapy you choose, it’s essential to find a holistic therapist that has extensive training using these techniques. More importantly, it’s necessary to find a reputable addiction treatment center that offers comprehensive treatment programs to fight addiction.

Make sure to look for certifications and licenses to practice specific treatments, such as Reiki, yoga, massage therapy, acupuncture, and others.

Remember, holistic therapists, don’t have to be psychotherapists. However, psychotherapy should also be part of your treatment; for this, you need to find a therapist with advanced training and licenses to practice in your state.

Getting Addiction Help

If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse, please reach out for help immediately. It’s essential to have the support and supervision of drug addiction specialists by your side.

Beyond the type of program someone starts, the idea of a holistic approach is to explore alternative therapies and treatment methods that promote recovery and progress. There’s no single treatment option for addiction. It’s vital to find rehab centers that offer various levels of care and that can pivot to meet your unique needs.

After the detox process, it’s paramount to tackle the addiction. Through individual therapy, people can understand what drives addictive behavior and see if there’s an underlying cause of addiction.

At Lighthouse Recovery Institute, we believe in offering customized drug addiction treatment plans for those struggling with drug or alcohol abuse. We look at each treatment program on a case-by-case basis to cater to whatever your needs are to get better and walk towards recovery.
